ABOUT THE PLAY

Two Alone/Too Together is a dark comedy that pits two emotionally wounded men against each other in a psychological minefield of their own creation.

Stephen Essay is a gay nurse living a lonely, regimented life in Athens, Ohio. Jude Donnelly is a mischievous wanderer, ostensibly on the road taking pictures for a fine art photography series titled America's Lost Highways, but is really trying to escape the emotional scars of his past. These two men meet one night after Jude crashes his car outside of Athens and is taken to the hospital where Stephen works.

Soon after their meeting Jude senses that Stephen is as emotionally wounded as he is, so he suggests that the two partake in a game of "role playing" that he believes will help them overcome the wounds of their pasts. Stephen resists at first, thinking the game silly and professionally out of bounds. But after a lot of coaxing and insults from Jude, Stephen gradually decides to play along- though he doesn't play the game in the manner Jude expects. Within this context the two men take each other on a savage journey of cat and mouse, as they both desperately try to reconnect with the world without the world turning around and slapping them in the face once again.
